Eight pillars of TPM

The eight pillars of TPM are mostly focused on proactive and preventive techniques for improving equipment reliability: Autonomous Maintenance. Focused Improvement. Planned Maintenance.

How many pillars are there in TPM?

The eight pillars of TPM are mostly focused on proactive and preventative techniques for improving equipment reliability. Places responsibility for routine maintenance, such as cleaning, lubricating, and inspection, in the hands of operators. Schedules maintenance tasks based on predicted and/or measured failure rates.

Jishu Hozen :

Autonomous Maintenance

  • Maintaining Basic Conditions on Shop floor and in Machines.

  • All over participation through TPM Circles.

Kobetshu Kaizen:

Focused Improvement

  • Improvement is everyone's activity.

  • Improvement is to eliminate Production losses and reduce cost.

Planned Maintenance:

  • Logical analysis "real causes for real counter measures".

  • Focus on Prevention.

  • Improvements in Reliability, Maintainability and cost.

Quality Maintenance:

Quality Maintenance

  • Developing Perfect Machine for Perfect Quality.

  • Eliminating In-Process defects and customer complaints.

Education & Training :

•Skills Development for Uniformity of work practices on machines.
•Skills for zero defects, zero breakdowns and zero accidents.
•Multi-skilled employees in all departments.

Development Management :

  • Developing machines for "high equipment effectiveness.

  • Quick process for developing new products.

Safety, Health & Environment :

  • To achieve zero accidents, zero health hazards at works.

  • To maintain zero pollution Plant and Environment.

Office TPM :

  • Offices oriented for Excellent support for manufacturing.

  • Improving Offices Man-hour efficiency.

To apply the concept of TPM (Total Productive Maintenance) a strong foundation and solid pillars are need. The Foundation of the TPM is 5S, while the main pillars of TPM are eight pillars. 8 pillars of TPM mostly are focus on proactive and preventative to increase reliability of machines and production equipment.

Basic Idea of TPM:

  1. Making Profitable company - Pursuit of economic efficiency, Zero Accidents, Zero Defects, Zero Failures.

  2. Philosophy of prevention

  3. Participation by all - overlapping small groups, Autonomous maintenance by operators

  4. Plant, process - Keep the equipment at optimal condition, Visual control, Making a clean work shop.

  5. Automation, unmanned operation - making a workshop that requires no manpower.

There are several levels per level, which are necessary for the correct root cause. It should be documented, because the possibility exists in another similar piece of equipment. "it should be documented because there is a possibility that it may occur in parts of another similar device. An inspection should be available for other machines or pieces of equipment, the the most important thing to track down and thoroughly trained to users and maintenance should be given in order not to repeat.
