Teamwork in TQM Activities

A Team work is essential in corporate for better output and a better bonding among. Working in TEAMS is the most ideal way of applying the management system of TQM (Total Quality Management), so that the final target will be achieve the intend integrate. The underlying reasons for cooperation are as follows:

  • Cooperation between the function symbol (Cross Function) is indispensable, because of the high level of its complexity.

  • In the face of such complexity, the necessary in the strategy of the future. For a great synergy and creativity, it is necessary to be involve with many parties in order to obtain the ideas and rights decisions.

  • With foster spirit of cooperation within the group, even different functions, will avoid labor (not mutually concern with part / field of work etc.).

  • Study together in a group (the Group), better gave a great effect for the Organization, rather than educate employees individually.

People who study and work together will usually provide motivation, so that the spirit of the project to complete a repair will continue to be maintain. In contrast, the people who work singly will quickly get bore and enthusiasm motivations.

Team work for TQM development 


As for the about the form of the group or team, TQM has been develop base on the level of its activities, as follows:

  1. The Quality Control Circle (QCC) / Small Group Activity (SGA)

  2. Quality Improvement Team (QITs) / Task Force (the task force)

  3. Cross-functional Team (Cross-company Team) or Team management.

QCC is a cooperation group that was form in a very bottom of the level, which is continuous quality improvement. Generally Incremental improvement (Kaizen)

Whereas QITs is a group collaboration is form in the lower and middle levels, to complete a repair / improvement projects, and then the group can dissolve themselves, so it's only a Circle of tasks (Task Force) only.

Cross Functional team work


Cross-functional Team form to implement quality improvement which was "Proactive Improvement", however, could also be utilize for repairs that are Reactive "Improvement".

Cross-functional team allows to bring together various interests between functions, so that a consensus can be achieve to create efficiency and maximum effectiveness in each function such.

In its formation, the Group should grow in the effective characteristics. According to McGregor, effective groups have always had a distinctive:

  • Create a relax and enjoyable meeting.

  • Foster togetherness by involving all members.

  • All members of mutual respect.

  • Accept the consensus to reach consensus.

  • The willingness to give advice and criticism.

  • There is the assignment of clear and accept by all members.

  • Not dominate by the leadership of the group.

  • Perform an ongoing evaluation.

Team excellence and performance


This excellence is attributable to team leaders who possess the following characteristics:

  • Trust -team leader should build trust among their team members and between themselves and team members as people will not work well with people they do not trust

  • Mutual support- individuals depend on each other to get the jobs of the team done. Members should therefore be supportively willing and able to assist each other in achieving peak performance.

  • Accountability-self assessment of team performance is a constant as is continual improvement

  • Reinforcement- wise team leaders reinforce team positive behaviors and attitudes by recognizing and rewarding them.

Teamwork is not a magic cure -all. Poorly run teams can do more damage to an organizations performance and corresponding competitiveness than having no teams at all. Thus, excellence is an overriding goal for the organization.
