Hi Friends !
Well, it's again the guys from Hays, and again post with the experience and expertise of recruiters. But no, we are not going to write another material about the remote or about how the IT worker to get a job. Today we will deal with Project Managers.
Increasingly, we are faced with their hiring and work out a lot of questions, including on the specifics of projects in the field of software development: who are employers looking for, what are their requirements? That's what we'll talk about.
In general, Project Manager's role is typical for a team that is working on a project. The manager is responsible for implementing a project or idea within a certain time frame by his team, using certain resources and in the customer's desired quality. The dictionary definition learned, now essentially.
I'm more inclined to think that Project Manager is, in fact, a leader who likes to solve problems and work with people.
In USA, the project manager is perceived in a peculiar way. Somewhere (often in startups) PM is forced to carry another role (or even several), and somewhere the duties of the project manager hang on the employee performing other functions. Managers often do not appreciate
THE pms, do not understand the volume and importance of their work. And often save - create hybrid roles (project manager / product manager; project manager / tech lead; project manager / system analyst).
So what is it and why does a PM need it?
Most often, project managers are looking for prototype, MVP (Minimum Viable Product) and software modules( functional blocks, individual features and components. There are cases when a company is looking for a project manager who will be responsible for several projects implemented within the framework of one product solution.
The main task of PM - to make the work so that the client liked everything and he had no complaints. To do this, PM manages one or more of the teams involved in the software development cycle. Before the PM set a strictly set deadline, it is allocated a certain budget (and all other resources). And then - himself.
«For me, the most important thing in the work of the project manager remains what attracted many years ago: I like to solve complex problems on the scale of the project, plan the project for years to come and turn a set of problems and pain points into a detailed and detailed plan.
To summarize, Project Manager:
- · Communicates with the customer.
- · Collects requirements
- · Processes requirements - crushes them into smaller ones.
- · Challenges his team, monitors time and resources;
- · Coordinates and monitors the progress of work;
- · Manages the project's budget
- · conducts design and technical documentation.
The planning and implementation of the project is based on waterfall or flexible methodologies (Scrum, Kanban, Lean, XP).
Blow the dust off your diploma: what kind of education does the PM need?
If your diploma has been on the table for a year instead of a mouse pad, it's time to fix it. Companies are most likely to identify higher education in project management among the requirements when looking for a project manager. Sometimes a shorter-term training from different educational sites will be suitable.
A big advantage (and for some companies is a mandatory requirement) is the official qualifications for project management. In USA, this is most often PMI
Another almost obligatory condition is regular professional development. To be on topic and to know about cutting-edge technologies, methodologies and rapidly changing business processes, it is important to constantly learn. It will be especially great if the candidate has taken additional courses and has a certificate in Agile-methodology and its frameworks.
I would highlight a number of qualities for a successful Project Manager: accuracy, ability to quickly delve into the task, the ability to separate what drives the project to the goal and what is not.
If you're more comfortable with a computer, it doesn't mean you can't be a great Project Manager, but communication and the ability to build relationships are the main aspect of the job,"
Many companies want PMs with IT experience and - quite well - in development. These can be both developers who have performed the additional scrum master function within the team or oversaw the development of individual elements, and Team Lead development teams - they best represent how the load in the team is distributed, and will be able to prioritize correctly.
Also in the role of PM effectively show testers or Team Lead testing teams and analysts (system, product, business analytics). Project coordinators or assistants in project management can grow to the role of project manager.
The main requirement for an ideal project manager in a spherical vacuum can be defined as: to achieve a quality result, he must understand the specifics of software development, tools, testing methods, system analysis tools, and sometimes features of the product architecture, if the team does not have a Tech Lead, ready to come to the rescue.
What will they ask for the interview?
The interview will certainly ask questions-cases on people management, interaction with the customer and management of development processes. The potential employer expects the candidate to describe in detail the difficult situations from his practice and how he was able to solve the problems before him. By the way, you can send us a resume here.
The employer will also check the basics of knowledge about artifacts, ideology and project management structure according to a certain methodology.
They will also ask questions about project planning: how the budget, timing, resources are calculated, what should be taken into account. It is important for the company to understand that the candidate is able to calculate the risks and work out planning scenarios in advance.
What career prospects shine PM?
Within the company, PM can over time expand its functionality and increase the area of responsibility - to start to manage several teams and projects at the same time. And even grow to Project Director.
And PM often switches to product management either as Scrum Master or Agile Coach. And if Project Manager is more involved in the technical part of the project implementation process, he can become a development manager or, for example, Delivery Manager.
