I'm Product Manager or product manager - beginning to end of PM

An internet industry practitioner, i often encounter such a question: am i a product manager or a project manager? do i follow up on the product progress or do i control the progress of the project better?

in many entrepreneurial companies, the product manager is the project manager, in charge of the beginning and end of the product and the beginning and end of the project; different companies have different requirements for product managers and project managers. now let's talk about personal insights with a-round companies:

startups have higher requirements for product managers, and need to understand both product processes and project technologies; because considering the overall situation and profitability of the company, the boss definitely hopes that the practitioners have a high degree of professionalism and all-round knowledge to reduce project expenses and complete the product on the shelves as soon as possible. so what about the process of the product and the project?

products and projects have their own characteristics

the concept of internet products is extended from the traditional sense of "product", is the output of goods in the internet field for business, it is to meet the needs and desires of internet users of the invisible carrier; in simple terms, internet products refer to the website to meet the needs of users and the creation of functions and services for operation, it is the integration of website functions and services.

internet projects, all related behaviors based on internet technology; internet projects are a matter that requires the internet to complete, for example, an online mall is an internet project.

a project is a temporary work to create a unique product, service or outcome, which means that the project has a clear starting and ending point; when the project objectives are achieved, or when the project is suspended because it will not or cannot achieve the goals, or when the project needs no longer exist. products are different, but there is also a life cycle, which may be terminated when the product is removed from the shelves.

a product can be a project, or an integration of multiple projects, a project may be a function of a product or a solution of a product, a project can also create a product; or a new process for creating a product; a product contains a project, and one or more projects make up a product.

product origin and end - demand analysis - product production stage

from product feasibility analysis - writing feasibility analysis report (mrd) - requirements collection and export - requirements description - requirements verification - requirements documentation (prd).

the entire requirements project includes four stages: 1. feasibility analysis; 2. requirements export and analysis; 3. requirements description; 4. requirements effectiveness verification. at the end of the whole process, you will be exposed to the beginning and end of the product, because the demand process involves the product's research and development thinking and the later software model, and also involves competitive product analysis, to get some new operational thinking, a product strategic thinking.

this process involves documentation as follows: feasibility analysis report, mrd, requirements list, competitive product analysis documentation, prd, prototype, dome.

after the completion of the requirements project is the implementation of the software, after the preliminary work of the requirements analysis is done, the preliminary software model and the architecture of the software can be basically formed, and the specific process and logic will be carried out at this stage of implementation; personal understanding is three major steps:

  • design input: platform model, requirement description, data description and logical mind map, brain map, etc.;
  • design activities: software architecture design, interface design, component design, system design;
  • outputs involved: system architecture, database description, interface description, component description;
  • after completing the implementation of the software, the next is the test, the test is generally divided into three categories, interface test, component test, system test, and finally delivery when the acceptance test; the test stage is a process of validity verification, but also a iterative process; wait until the test is completed can be delivered to the product; can also be said to be the suspension of a project.

project management – applying knowledge, skills, tools and techniques to project activities to meet project requirements.

there are five main categories:

  • initiate
  • planning
  • execute
  • monitor
  • closure

managing a project typically includes:

identify requirements

address stakeholders' needs, concerns, and expectations when planning and executing projects.
establish, maintain and conduct positive, effective and cooperative communication among stakeholders.
manage stakeholders to meet project needs and create project deliverables.

balancing competing project constraints, including: scope, quality, schedule, budget, resources, risks;
the specific characteristics of the project and the specific environment in which it operates can have an impact on constraints, and project management should be managed accordingly.

Understanding the difference between products and projects can identify and cooperate in mature companies, and can also use their own advantages in entrepreneurial companies to achieve goals. whether you are a product manager or a project manager, you should be familiar with the process of the product and the project, so that you can deal with sudden risks, and you can propose solutions to the risks to achieve your goals.

If you are a product manager, you should be familiar with the project process and technology as soon as possible, don't be fooled by the project manager, if you are a project manager, then you are familiar with the process of the product, what is your control and monitoring, to achieve the goal of delivery is your main goal. it can be said that a successful product manager supports 60% of the project to achieve the goal; completing the project is also part of his job.
